34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. 35 Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. 36 His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. 37 It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven.
Psalm 89:34-37 (KJV)
One of the most amazing things about God is how much He loves us. Personally, I am amazed at how much He loves me, despite all the mistakes that I have made. I was such a bad person. My thoughts were evil. My intentions were evil. Even my actions were evil at times. I did not deserve God’s love. I still don’t deserve God’s love. But guess what? He loved and still loves me anyway!
And how did God show His love towards us? Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”. The word “commendeth” means “to show” and “to prove”. God therefore showed us His love and also proved that this love that He was showing us was actually for us! He gave His own life for us. He didn’t send an angel or any other heavenly creature to pay the price for us. He came to earth as a human being and died for all humanity. You were bought with precious blood! You were bought with divine blood! You were bought with the blood of our risen LORD!
Because of His great love and sacrifice, and also because of His resurrection, God has not only saved us but has made a covenant with us. What is this covenant? If we were to summarise this covenant in one statement what would it be? Well, the Bible has already done that for us:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Despite what Christ has done for us, and despite how He has made us into new creatures, we sometimes forget His covenant promises towards us. Sometimes we take for granted the covenant that He has made with us. Let us therefore look at three (3) things that we must remember about God’s covenant promises towards us.
#1: God’s covenant promises to us are incredible
In Psalm 89, God says that the seed of David will be established forever. It will be like the sun and the moon, those faithful celestial witnesses that give us light in the day and the night. How incredible! What an incredible covenant promise to receive from the LORD!
But guess what? We have received covenant promises as well. In Christ we are new, we are whole, we are born-again, we are redeemed, we are delivered and set-free, we are victorious, we have a bright future, and we will live forever in His Kingdom. God’s covenant promises to us are absolutely incredible! Not even death itself is any match for God’s covenant promises towards us. Not even death itself can separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus!
I want to share with you a scripture passage that shows how incredible God’s covenant promises to you and I are:
“4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved), 6 and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
Ephesians 2:4-6 (KJV)
We are saved by grace through faith, and the amazing thing is that, after saving us, God has made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ. This means that He gave us spiritual authority. This authority is in Christ, it is powered by Christ, and it is through Christ. We therefore have authority over the powers of darkness, over infirmities, and even over the traps of sin. You are not weak. Your life is not meaningless. You are not without purpose. God’s promises towards you are precious. His thoughts towards you are thoughts of peace, not evil thoughts, to give you bright hope and an amazing future in Him.
#2: God is committed to keeping those promises
In Psalm 89:34 the LORD says, “My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.”
It is one thing to promise you something great. For example, I can promise to give each of you a house, a car, or $100 million. You might say “wow, Pastor Chad’s promises are incredible”. But guess what? If I do not keep my promises, in the end, those promises would be worthless.
God’s promises are incredible, the most incredible of promises. And, guess what? He actually keeps them. As a matter of fact, He is quite committed to keeping them.
“33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34And no longer shall each one teach his neighbour and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more”
Jeremiah 31:33-34 (ESV)
God isn’t just promising you that you will be great, blessed, protected, redeemed, etc. He is showing that He is actively committed to the covenant that He has made with you. As we just read in Jeremiah, the LORD is committed to “writing His covenant on our hearts”, He is committed to “making us His people”, He is committed to “forgiving our iniquity”, and He is committed to “remembering our sin no more”. God is committed to our Salvation, our Spiritual growth and development, and the eventual Glorification that we will experience when we meet Him. As He said in Psalm 89, He will not break nor alter or change His covenant promises that He has declared.
#3: We have to be committed to His covenant with us
God’s covenant promises towards us are incredible, and He is absolutely committed to keeping them. But ask yourself this question, “how committed am I to my covenant with God?”
Psalm 89:35 says, “Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David.” God made a promise that He would not lie to King David concerning His promises to the king. But God was able to establish this covenant with David because of David’s attitude and commitment to God Almighty.
“And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.”
Acts 13:22 (ESV)
Despite David’s mistakes and shortcomings, He was a man who loved God and repented of his sins. He understood what true worship and dedication unto God was. He understood the importance of God’s covenant promises towards him, and he also knew his role in being committed to such covenant promises. He understood what it meant to protect the integrity of the covenant He had with God.
29 Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) 31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
Genesis 25:29-34 (ESV)
Are you willing to sell your birthright in Christ for the things of this world? Are you willing to sell your soul for stew? Esau could not walk in the true covenant promises of God, because He did not have the right perspective of the covenant. He saw food and temporary things as more important than His relationship and covenant with God. He could not see the generational, spiritual and eternal significance of that birthright. But God knew that Jacob, Esau’s brother, would have been able to see such significance in the birthright. Jacob was therefore the one that experienced the name change and the fullness of God’s covenant promise, with his name being changed to “Israel” and his sons becoming the heads of the new nation’s future tribes. This movement led to the genesis of a people group through whom God’s covenant promises for all humanity was going to be revealed.
Conclusion
God’s promises to us are true, and they are part of His overall covenant made towards us. He is committed to our well-being, to working out all things for those who are called by God according to His purposes. We can trust and know, by Faith, that we serve a God who is Faithful, trustworthy, and just to reveal Himself mightily and to forgive, cleanse, heal, deliver, provide, correct, teach, keep, restore, and reward us. We serve a truly covenant-keeping God!
